What it is, and it is not.

Branding, much like graphic design, has become a nebulous term in recent years, with each person defining it based on their own perspective and understanding.

For a graphic designer, branding is about colours, typography, and logos. For a marketer, it revolves around messaging, advertisements, and product or service development. And for a business owner, branding may be seen as the story they offer. While each viewpoint contains elements of truth, they overlook a critical aspect. As brand expert Marty Neumeier puts it:

"Products are made in Factories.

Brands are made in the hearts & minds of people."

A brand is not created on paper; it is shaped in the minds of its users. It is a reputation, not an implementation. A brand is not defined by the colours you choose, but by how customers perceive a product, service, or company.

Ultimately, it is the commercial reputation of a business, product, or individual.

So, if a brand is not made on paper, what role does a designer play in branding? As discussed earlier, graphic design’s true power lies in its ability to tell stories. Designers use various paradigms to craft successful brands, but ultimately, it comes down to one core skill: effectively communicating your story to your audience.

A designer understands that every element of a design communicates something—and that what you leave out also speaks volumes. Branding involves bringing together all the nuanced elements that go into creating a product or service and weaving them into a cohesive narrative that resonates with customers.

This is where we, as a 'branding agency,' come into play. At the heart of our work, we create identity and strategy, but the true essence of a brand lives in the hands of the customer. It is their perception that ultimately defines and sustains the brand. And we understand that.

To better understand the terminology in this field, here is a breakdown of some key concepts:

Strategic Planning

Strategic planning includes market research, market analysis, competitive research, and creating a business assessment. Strategic planning involves defining a company's direction and making decisions on allocating resources to pursue this direction. It encompasses setting long-term goals, analysing internal and external environments, and formulating actionable steps to achieve business objectives. This process serves as a roadmap for organisational growth and success.

Brand Strategy

Brand strategy is a component of the overall business strategy that focuses on how a brand is perceived in the market. It includes defining the brand's core elements, such as its mission, values, target audience, positioning, and messaging. A well-crafted brand strategy ensures that all aspects of the brand align with the company's goals and resonate with the intended audience.

Identity Design

Identity Design refers to the tangible and intangible elements that represent a brand, including its visual identity (logos, colour schemes, typography), tone of voice, and overall customer experience. It's the process of creating a distinct image and identity in the consumers' minds, differentiating the brand from competitors. A brand identity is the outward expression of a brand, including its name, trademark, communications, and look and feel (Marty Neumeier)

Key Differences

●      Scope and Focus: Strategic planning covers the entire organisation's direction, while brand strategy zeroes in on the brand's market position. Identity design is about implementing the brand strategy through visual and experiential elements.

●      Sequence: Strategic planning precedes brand strategy, establishing the company's goals. The brand strategy is developed to align with these goals, followed by identity design efforts to bring the strategy to life.

●      Purpose: Strategic planning aims for overall business success, the brand strategy seeks to carve out a unique market position, and identity design strives to create a memorable and appealing brand identity.

By understanding these distinctions, businesses can develop and execute strategies that ensure their brand remains impactful and resonates deeply with their audience.
